Abstract:
The explosion in the amount of data produced and acquired is one of the most significant consequences of technological innovations in recent years. The increasing size and complexity of these data makes their management and analysis formidably complex. Management denotes the set of operations needed to effectively and efficiently organize, store and retrieve data. Analysis refers to the set of techniques for the extraction and synthesis of relevant information for forecasting and decision-making in intelligent systems. Specifically, the line of research addresses:
large scale data management, aiming to propose new integration, organization, indexing and processing techniques, able to take into consideration the specificity of the data, also in terms of quality and semantics, and to enable data retrieval and analysis, both on stored data and on data available as continuous streams.
automatic learning from data, aimed at the progress of theory, at the development of algorithms for learning structures and representations based on empirical data and at the use of algorithmic and theoretical results for the development of new technologies for artificial intelligence and data analysis.
visual representation of data to communicate information in a clear and efficient manner and to facilitate the identification of patterns, trends and correlations.
Application domains include biological systems, robotics and computational vision, network analysis, ambient assisted living, multimedia systems, industrial and transport systems, and the optimization of complex systems.
